A minimum kit and pharmacy equipped to deal with wilderness medical emergencies: asthma, allergy / severe allergic reaction, diabetic with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), not breathing, and chest pain. This kit augments a Level I / Level II First-Aid Kit. This kit is not meant to be the all-in-one answer recognizing that capabilities and expectations change depending upon prevailing conditions and the situation at hand. However, in a remote setting, this kit will provide some very welcome options.
If you are the medical sheep dog in your group, you know, the guy who always seems to be the one answering the call for medical assistance or kneeling at the side of an injured companion, then you likely already have an interest in both the gear and training necessary for your role. Some sources for training include American Red Cross, First Responder, EMT, and wilderness medical training courses.

Billyboler – Good point and well stated. As I mentioned, these are prescriptions. There are physicians that are outdoor oriented that will write prescriptions for these medications labeled “for expedition use”. That will be up to the individual physician. I do know docs that have done this so I know this is not out of the realm of reality or far fetched.
Please also remember the stated limitations . . . a remote environment where this is the only solution.

EpiPens are …
EpiPens are expensive . . . I don’t have any special secrets. The one I have I had a physician write a script when I was in the Navy . . . haven’t needed it despite carrying it everywhere!
Prednisone does …
Prednisone does require a prescription. A 5 day course (5 tabs) would be something to talk to your family physician about. They will usually consider this if they know you well and are outdoor orientated. The prescription is usually labeled “for expedition use”. Hope that helps!
