Does Business Management Training Create Inspirational Leaders?

It seems that the vast number of articles and descriptions of the benefits of business management training are written by people who are marketing, selling, and delivering the management leadership training programs.

I guess that’s why they use the buzz words of “inspirational and dynamic” when they refer to the visage of the people who have attended one of the programs, read their books, or taken their online course.

I don’t know why that is except that most people who create, sell, and deliver professional services seem to target those organizations with the greatest revenue potential for them.

We all know that it is easier to get more business out of an existing customer than it is to find a new one.

Secondly, I think that if they stumble on a company your size, they think you will be impressed by the marquee clients in your industry who have chosen them.

And having testimonials from the leaders in the industry will, and probably actually does, intimidate their competitors.

However this does not mean you should play their game and hire them based on their self-created halo effect.

When you visit the web site of a company offering business management training, read how they describe the experiences they attribute to their special brand of training and you may see that they are written to appeal to people in larger organizations. They seem to want to attract the folks used to throwing money at a perceived problem, most likely someone else’s money at that.

How much credibility would your manager, supervisor, Uncle Ed,  or you boss have if they showed up on Monday morning full of the “seminar speak” and catch phrases they had just picked up? What would you do? Probably the same thing you always do – smile, acknowledge their new found sensitivity and focus on what’s important and they stay out of their way until the spell has passed.

Let’s picture how management leadership training should be delivered to your organization – so that it is not just another “flash in the pan” idea of the day.

Management leadership training is a critical component – at the very core of success in business today. Therefore, if your company has 200 or fewer employees – everyone is leading everyone else and each person is a manager of somebody. Therefore the training must be available to everyone from the loading dock to the Board room.

As team spirit rises and more and more people focus on their now articulated shared goals – new hires come along. For the management leadership training process to reach them they must have access to it as soon as possible. It helps diffuse any latent “us vs them” attitude they may bring with them.

No one has the resources to have management leadership training professionals on call – so how about getting a program that is delivered on DVDs? Depending on the size of your company you can buy a set for each department and make their completion part of the probationary requirement for continued employment.

And if you buy the training on a set of DVDs you have only invested a few dollars. Later you can bring in experts, send key people to Hawaii for an advanced session etc. etc.

The future of your organization will be either the time you’ll wish you had gotten serious about management leadership training, or the time when you are really glad you’d did.
