    You just said it is common sense and explained how you intuitively though about it. You did not provide any empirical evidence. Diffusion of responsibility happens often, as proved by the Ringelmann rope experiment and a bunch of other studies.     It does happen in groups of all sizes. Who says it only happens in big groups? pinguin6569? Allow me to doubt until you provide some reliable references in the way I did.

    You are mistaking. Diffusion of responsibility merely happens in scenarios of this nature. It does not happen often in groups this small. And social loafing happens when an individual “slacks off” because he thinks his work and effort will not be considered. This was definitely not the case here.

    It’s still wrong. The comment space is too small for me to give specific references but I recommend you search for “social loafing” or “diffusion of responsibility” on wikipedia or google. There is plenty of research on this subject in the field of psychology and “game theory” and empirical evidence supports my point of view. For example see “Ringelmann rope experiment”. An actual group pulls more but each extra group member causes a decline in individual effort. It’s proved!

You would think you definitely wont have the strength to do it. Now, If you think there is someone else with you, there is a big chance you would try. That effort will be a very big one, because you think everybody else is doing it. But then we all know its only you. See? Common sense.

    Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. If the donkey thinks he’s working in a team he has less relative responsibility for the outcome. If there’s 5 donkeys each donkey only has 20% part of the work. The donkey might therefor think that he can slack while the other 4 donkeys do the work for him. If there’s only 1 donkey he has 100% responsibility for the outcome and will have more incentive to excel at his work.
